Gish

I have just played through Gish and watched David Rosens design tour however I was unable to access Brian Moriarty’s talk on Constellation (problems with quicktime I think.) Anyways here are my thoughts;

I enjoyed playing Gish because of it’s interesting gameplay mechanics. First of all, like David Rosens said, the fluid controls are what I believe makes this game unique from other platformers and what also makes it fun. The level design, sound, graphics are not outstanding however the unique controls in the game introduces a new gameplay experience. “Gish’ moves realistically through a clever physics and motion engine, allowing the player to manipulate or utilize the surroundings to proceed through levels. I found this game to be more enjoyable the more I played it, as I began getting more skilled at jumping, sliding and utilizing these controls. Although the game is very basic in its graphics, and level design, the clever controls allow for interesting gameplay. In Gish, players are not limited by pre determined “moves.” Whats interesting here is that games such as this allow the player to almost be limitless in the way they move, creating a kind of non-linear experience.
